Diagnostics

After a careful endo-microscopic examination of the patient, special testing is required:

Hearing diagnostics in hearing loss, deafness and tinnitus
Hearing tests consist of a variety of material, incl. pure-tone, speech tests and objective audiometric recordings (incl. otemissions, ABR).

Testing of the vestibular system in case of vertigo
Vertigo is the result of a so-called „sensory conflict", i.e. a disturbance in any of the parts of the vestibular system. Different tests can be applied to differentiate the type of disorder.

Rhinodiagnostics (incl. diagnostics for allergies)
Rhinological diseases can be diagnosed in several ways. Endoscopy, CT scanning and specific test play a role.

Diagnostics of dysphagia
Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) can result from a variety of different problems which have to be differentiated by pH-metric examination (to exclude reflux disease), by videoendoscopy and related techniques.

Medical therapy

  1. Medical and related therapies for inner ear disorders
Acute inner ear disorders (sudden hearing loss or vertigo) can be treated by different drugs which are frequently applied intravenously. Slowly progressing hearing loss or tinnitus have to be carefully diagnosed before the onset of therapy. There are hearing aids, drug therpy regimes or behavioural therpy approaches applicable. Chronic vertigo (or dizziness, particularly in elderly patients) can be well treated by drugs, specific neurofeedback training programs or positional manouevers (e.g. in benign positional vertigo).
Posttraumatic inner ear disorders (after blunt trauma of the head or "whiplash" inujury) require special diagnostic and therapeutic efforts which may include surgery.

  2. Medical therapy for disorders of the nose (incl. allergy)
A „blocked nose" due to mucosal swelling is frequently the result of a nasal hyperreactivity or a genuine allergic reaction. After (or in addition to ) surgery, a local treatment of the nose is required. Several treatment options are available for the special needs of the diseased nasal mucosa (incl. nasal lavage, a sequential drug treatment scheme, allergy treatment).

  3. Therapy of dysphagia
Dyphagia (swallowing disorders) is easily treated by drugs in case of a laryngo-pharyngeal reflux. Severe types - e.g., after cerebral haemorrhage or head trauma - can be successfully treated by a swallowing training (FEES) which helps to prevent the occurrence of lethal complications in those patients, e.g. pneumonia.

  4. Therapy after blunt head trauma and whiplash-type of injury
Blunt trauma of the head and neck or whiplash-type of injury can lead to long-term disability with tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, pain, paraesthesia of the arms, and a limited moveability of head, neck & shoulders. A combined therapy with drug therapy, neurofeedback, behavioural therapy ("coaching") and a specialized physical therapy leads to a normalization of everyday activity in the majority of the patients.
